Tanzania Update - 10 November 2009

Patandi College:

  • Our Vision – A Resource Centre producing and loaning our teaching materials for blind and partially sighted children
  • We have email confirmation from Rotary Club of Arusha Mt Meru that they will work as a partner with us on this project
  • The Arusha club will help with storage, shelving and wiring
  • In January Rotarian Alan Suttie plans to set up digital recording and editing of childrens books with computer equipment sourced from a local Arusha supplier
  • Braille and audio books being shipped out
  • Denise Jackson from the Dundee Discovery Club, (a University Librarian) and her husband will be setting up an on line library system
  • Dundee Discovery Rotary Club have agreed a £500 contribution
  • We are applying for £800 district simplified grant
     
 Mwanza:
  • Delphinne is now our link – She is a former Rotary sponsored student who is now a member of Mwanza Rotary Club, She has recently visited the school for an update
  •  A US TV channell recently broadcast a programme on Mitindo Primary School and we received a number of responses via our website
  • Following one contact Rtn Alan Suttie has met with Rick Guidotti  of www.positiveexposure.org  to coordinate supplies. He has also provided a link to  www.underthesamesun.com and its founder Peter Ash
  • Both have been to Mitindo Primary School and are keen to work with us. The following video was produced by them.
  • We will concentrate on provision of low vision aids, UV filters and Braille King roller frames  

 
Upendo:
  • We are grateful that we have sponsors for 11 out of 21 children. Additional offers are welcome.
  •  Received £500 as a one off donation to purchase a tv & dvd for the children
  • Looking to also fund computer and a trip for the youngsters
  •  Our colleagues in Dundee are looking to source a football strip for the 11 boys who want to form their own football team
 Conclusion:
  • Budgeting a spend of £4,300 and if we are successful with the District we are looking for just £900 more to complete our current programme
  • Rtns Alan Suttie and Denise Jackson with thier partners leave for Tanzania on 16th January. Alan will be there for 4 weeks and ask that you keep fingers and toes crossed that all our plans materialise
